For many years are know the area of Messolonghi for spas and mud baths. The seawater in the region has increased salinity due to the microclimate of the area (and thus here developed the largest saltworks of Greece). Swimming in this water causes significant relief to aching muscles and joints.
Also due to these conditions and the appropriate landscaping of the lagoon formed substantial reserves of mature mud ( silt - clay : Agia Triada, Tourlida, Finikia ) . The transfer of appropriate sediments from adjacent mountains , in contact with salt water , made the substrate to create mud. The sediment materials are enriched with organic ingredients from rotting seaweed and involving microorganisms that converted the sediments in mature therapeutic mud.
The mud is black , homogeneous, with good plasticity and perfect affinity on the skin, elements that make it ready for application. The mud acts therapeutically simultaneously in three ways: thermal , mechanical and chemical. During the application due to the heat and texture creates local congestion , as well as excellent cleanliness and tender touch of skin. The black color is due to sulfides , which are important therapeutic component, because during the contact of the mud with the human skin react with skin’s acidic components and freeing sulphide ions. These, in turn, absorbed by the skin , treating dermatological diseases. Thus the chemical action is due to the abundance of metals and minerals that have identified palliative or curative properties. A clinical study that conducted in 2011 demonstrated the beneficial effect of curative mud patches to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Show detailed information about study here or here .
